A studio for the unquiet image.
B lack Cove Studio is the working name of Nissa Neves-Charge, a photographer based in Dorset. She has been making images for fifteen years; the studio was named for the tidal cove her grandmother walked her to as a child, which she still returns to when a roll of film needs to find its subject.
The work begins in a camera — 35mm, medium format, occasionally something older — and ends somewhere between a darkroom and a living-room. Negatives are bathed, scraped, overlaid, re-photographed. Sometimes a CRT is involved. Sometimes a window. The resulting prints are archival pigment on cotton rag, limited in edition, and signed on the reverse.
Editions are small because the time they take is large. Most plates take between six weeks and six months from first exposure to first print.
